SESQUICENTENNIAL CELEBRATIONS & ST JAMES

(1861 - 2011)

Between 1857 and 1861, the acclaimed Victorian architect, William Butterfield, came to St Mawgan during which time he was responsible for building the Village School and the ‘Old Rectory’. He also carried out some restoration work to the Church, added the Vestry and built the Lychgate.  On completion of this work, in 1861, the Church was re-dedicated by the Bishop of Exeter on St James’ Feast Day - 25th July – 150 years ago!

This Feast Day has been celebrated annually in St Mawgan ever since, with children’s sports in the afternoon and adult’s sports in the evening. The sports are always held on the nearest Wednesday to the 25th July, before and not after, and therefore this year will be held on 20th July with the children's sports beginning at 12:30 pm and the adult's at 6pm.

St Mawgan History Group will be exhibiting photographs and information about the tradition of Feast Sports during the Flower Festival, which this year runs from 10th – 13th July. Entitled ‘Sesquicentennial Celebrations’ in honour of the re-dedication of the church, the Festival also picks up the theme of St James, as each arrangement will feature a scallop shell, which is his emblem.

Continuing the link with St James, for some time now, work has been on-going to refurbish St James' Well in Ball Lane.  To celebrate, the well will be dressed with decorative boards made by the pre-school and primary school children and everyone is invited to come to the well for a short dedication service at 10:30 am on Sunday 24th July followed by a Community Songs of Praise in the church at 11:00 am.
